This is the springboard for the mission on open access, a concept championed most notably by activist and programmer Aaron Swartz. For this mission's purpose, a more general connotation of "open access" is taken that does not carry specific weight towards academia and research publication. Instead, the open access concept is broadened to more completely focus on information as data, especially data belonging to the public. Articles pertaining to this mission will carry the mission banner mission/open access. It is part of the broader mission on software sociology.
