We avoid using the term pixel to refer to screen dots in software, instead endeavouring to use an older and shorter synonym: pel. If you have experience with computers of the 1980s and early 1990s, you have probably encountered this term before.

We only use the word pixel to refer to physical hardware pixels. Since we also hold that physical hardware pixels should never be referred to in software (see OAM), you will almost always see the term pel used instead. Pels are pixel-like objects which have a pel-to-pixel ratio. In Sirius DOS, this ratio is 1:1, but on other machines, such as those running UNIX or Anodyne, it may be arbitrary. Software should treat this as a variable at the ABI level.
