Base 64 is a family of numeral systems that use 64 characters to encode numeric data. It is one of three numeral bases—the others being thornal and dwarf thornal—that lie outside of the alphanumeric natural base set. It was originally created to facilitate 7-bit ASCII compliant data encoding for use in early Web protocols such as SMTP.[1]
